A project management office, commonly referred to as a PMO, ensures that the standards of project management are maintained across an organization. This group can be either internal or external and should be experts in best practices. There are different types of PMOs that can help you in various ways. Here are the three primary types of PMO project management.
Sometimes the PMO doesn’t need to control the organization but is there to help if it’s needed. A supportive PMO fills this role. If a group is working on a project and needs help setting up a timeline or maintaining a timeline, they can seek out the PMO for help. They’ll receive tips and ideas from the PMO that might help them with their project management but they don’t necessarily need to take the advice. This type of PMO is simply there for support whenever it’s needed.
Some companies will want to use a PMO to help create some control while still allowing the employees working on a project some freedom. In this case, a controlling PMO might be the right choice. This group isn’t going to hover over a project team but also isn’t going to be very hands-off. These types of PMOs are typically used to provide a template, procedures, and reporting for all projects within the organization. This is the most common type of PMO because it allows experts to have their hands on the projects without making others within the organization feel uncomfortable.
With supportive PMOs and controlling PMOs, the team members on a project have at least a little bit of ownership of their work. They are trusted with the project but have some guidance from the PMO. A directive PMO leaves no room for ownership of a project. They completely control the project management and leave no room for freedom. In these cases, everything must be done exactly as the PMO says. This type of PMO is most commonly used in highly regulated and high-risk situations. The organization can’t afford any slip-ups so everything must be done in a specific way. The directive PMO oversees everything to ensure that it is done in that way.
